I paint what stops me. Lately that's mostly semi-abstract landscapes, though a face or a glass on a table still pulls me in. It usually comes down to colour, light, and the quiet feeling of a moment. New work goes up here as I make it.

Description
Mountains and quiet water, the kind of landscape I keep wanting to explore. Partway through, something made me lay down a single bold mark, and it settled into a centre of energy the rest of the painting could hold. The blues and greens stay calm and appeasing. A light keeps watch over it all, so the stillness remains.

This painting comes from a memory of doing homework at my desk on winter nights as a boy. I felt the weight of school routine and the darkness pressing at the window. But something was gathering on the horizon, a quiet light. It held the sense that all this effort was leading somewhere. Your time will come.

Description
This was me chasing colour in the moment. Bright blues emerging from an almost colourless dark, as if they had been there all along and simply needed activating. I love how luscious they feel against the water. There is energy in it and peace at the same time, each colour answering the others once the light appears.

Description
Dies Irae came from that feeling when something inside you refuses to stay quiet. It builds until it becomes uncontrollable, inevitable. Warm light breaks through the dark and pours down onto the water below, gold against the deep blue. It is the eruption in a series called Your Time Will Come, the moment before stillness gives way.

Description
This one began with structure. A bright horizon set against heavy darks, mountains, then light worked into the sky. My favourite part was building the reflection in the water and letting it meet the warm colours in the foreground. It holds a distant, atmospheric feeling, as if you are watching something quietly magical unfold from afar.

This began on a bright morning in Porto. The streets were full of tourists and noise. Then I saw them. A green dress, a red bench, two figures looking out at the water. Everything moved around them and they stayed perfectly still. There was such care in how they sat together. Painting them felt like holding on to a small moment of calm.

A sunset walk near Woolwich pier, the river glowing as commuters hurry home. Amongst them, a girl moves to the beats in her headphones, calm and unbothered by any of it. Present in her own little world. I loved how untouched she seemed by everything around her.
